I opened my back door at 11pm and Luna was just lying there on the patio. Not sleeping, not resting. Lying in a way that cats don't lie when everything is okay.
I took one step toward her and froze. Because I didn't recognise her.
I've had Luna for four years. She sleeps on my pillow every night. She's the first thing I see when I open my eyes. And I did not recognise her.
Her face was so swollen, so completely wrong, my brain couldn't process that it was her. Then she moved. This tiny exhausted little movement. She dragged her chin along the concrete trying to headbutt my hand.
That's when I fell apart.
Her right eye was bulging in a way that eyes are not supposed to bulge. Her left eye was matted shut with blood. Half her face felt soft under my hands, in places it should not be soft. And through all of it, she was still trying to comfort me.
A stray dog had gotten into the garden. The place she'd been safe every day for four years. I wrapped her in a blanket and drove to the emergency vet at midnight.
What Luna needs right now
- Deep corneal scratch. Needs a specialist surgeon, or she loses her sight.
- Torn ear and infected bite wounds requiring ICU monitoring.
- On strong IV antibiotics. Buying time, not a fix.
She crawled to the back door so I would find her. She waited for me.
